Michael Sboro Takes Second in Hickory Ford Focus Action
HICKORY, N.C. - Determined to redeem himself from the troubles that have plagued him at Hickory Motor Speedway this season, Michael Sboro entered the July 22 Carolina Ford Focus Midget event on a mission. Qualifying in the fifth position, Sboro would start on the outside pole by virtue of a six-car invert and take the lead on the first lap.
Staying out front for the first three circuits, Sboro would fall to second after being passed by eventual winner Aron Oakley and would remain there until the caution flew with three laps remaining in the 35-lap event. After riding under yellow, rain started to fall and so did Oakley due to mechanical issues and Sboro would be the first to see the checkered in the rain-shortened event.
"We had a very strong car but I don't think we had anything for Aron but when he slowed under the caution I thought we had finally caught a break," added Sboro who picked up the Series first-ever win at the historic .363-mile oval. "We interpreted the rules a little differently than USAC called them as far as leading under the cautions but it is what it is. We are still happy with a second place finish but a first would have been a whole lot better."
Sboro will be heading back to his old stomping grounds July 28 to defend his 2005 win at Adirondack Int'l Speedway competing in the Northeast Ford Focus Series where he was the Series' inaugural Champion last season.
"I'm extremely excited to be heading back up to New York for a few races," continued Sboro. "I grew up racing in the area and won several races in the region last year including Adirondack on our way to the championship. We are going to leave the car up there following the race and head back up in a couple of weeks to try and defend our title at the Oswego Classic as well."
